MERCER COUNTY, W. Va. -A Mercer County school had the opportunity to demonstrate their STEM skills in a competition against others from across the state and now they’re going even further.
Montcalm’s robotics team made waves at the Mercer County VEX robotics competition which earned them the opportunity to represent their area in the West Virginia VEX State Championships last week.
They walked away with three trophies: a Design Award, Teamwork Championship Award, and Robot Skills Award, which is the highest score in the entire Mountain State. This makes it their second year in a row winning the Teamwork and Skills awards.
It’s also their chance to return to the worldwide stage, letting them compete at the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas, also for the second year in a row. The team members we spoke to credit their success to their ability to work together and work with other teams competing.
“Lots of teamwork, even in the solo-ish runs, it still requires teamwork and strategy-building,” says Andrew Kirk.
“I’ve made a lot of friends along the way, met a lot of people… It’s definitely an experience that you’ll never see if you don’t join,” says Allen Austin.
Now, they’re asking for support to give them that opportunity, needing funding to cover the expenses of the trip. If you’d like to help them compete, Austin says you can mail checks to Montcalm High School 5366 Simmons River Rd, Rock, WV 24747.
The world championship will be held on May 6th.
