YAZOO CITY, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) – Authorities in Mississippi say several students from a middle school had to be taken to the hospital Tuesday after eating edibles.

According to Yazoo Police Chief Terry Gann, six Yazoo City middle school students were hospitalized following the incident.

The police chief said a fellow student brought the edibles into Woolfolk Middle School and gave them out to his classmates.

The students were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Gann said authorities are still looking into the case, and that the student who distributed the edibles will likely be charged.

“We’re trying to get down to where this kid got them from,” he said. “It’s an ongoing investigation.”

Woolfolk is part of the Mississippi Achievement School District.

Superintendent Dr. Earl Watkins said school leaders are working with law enforcement.

“The matter is currently under investigation, and we are working in coordination with local authorities to determine the facts,” his statement read. “As a district, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of our students and have taken proactive steps to educate families about products that may appear harmless but pose serious risks.”

The students were expected to be released from the hospital after getting treatment.
