AUSTIN, Texas — Travis County is investing millions to help house seniors at risk of homelessness.
On Tuesday, county commissioners voted unanimously to approve nearly $4.5 million for a new affordable housing development called Cairn Point Montopolis, which will be located just north of Austin’s airport near the Montopolis Recreation Center.
The complex will offer 150 deeply affordable units, specifically for people 55 years and older who are either homeless or at the risk of experiencing homelessness. Residents will also have access to on-site services like food assistance, health care and legal help.
Funding for the development comes from $110 million received in federal COVID-19 relief that the county set aside to address homelessness.
“By approving today’s contract … Travis County is one step closer to executing our bold vision to spend $110 million of federal stimulus funding to catalyze the development of affordable housing to help our homeless neighbors,” Travis County Commissioner for Precinct 3 Ann Howard said. “I’m proud and prideful of the partnerships the county has forged with the city of Austin and our local nonprofit providers to make our vision a reality.”
A separate Cairn Point development is already under construction, located off Cameron Road near Northeast Early College High School.
