Having a decent bottle of whisky in the cupboard, whether that’s for an after work drink or having friends over, is a must for many. But they can be pricey.

Whisky lovers will know the trials of hunting for the perfect bottle that doesn’t compromise flavour for price but also doesn’t break the bank – and the most savvy shoppers will always be on the look out for a great deal.

Handily, though, it’s now possible to nab a bottle of the Jura 10 Year Old Whisky, 70 Cl for £26.34, down from £31.49, on TheBottleClub.com. Compare that to Amazon, where it’s currently on sale for £28, and shoppers have themselves a solid deal.

Hailing from the tiny Scottish island of Jura, the whisky is described as having “notes of damp hay and soft, malty cereal notes” and can be drunk neat or on the rocks. It’s matured in ex-bourbon barrels for extra flavour and then finished off in aged oloroso sherry casks to boot.

Alternatively, whisky fans could try the Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask from The Whisky Exchange. It’s pricier, costing £71.75, but comes with “aromas of candied lemon, toffee and ripe bananas”. Or head to Tesco for a bottle of The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky 70cl for a more wallet friendly £36 – it won the 2019 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) Gold award and has “a creamy, smooth character.”

One shopper on Amazon said about the Jura whisky: “Lovely, mellow Jura 10 year old – overall chocolatey with fruits and a hint of spice, with very light peaty smokiness – a real cracker of an entry level single malt with wide appeal.”

A second said: “I’ve had my ‘go to’ whisky that I could always depend upon, my whisky comfort blanket, if you will, for a number of years, however when a friend introduced me to the Jura 10 year old it’s safe to say that all that changed and this is the only whisky now that I’ll consider purchasing. To paraphrase another advertising slogan, this whisky does exactly what it says on the tin (bottle). You want notes of toffee, honey and apple? You got it in this light, delicate and sublimely smooth whisky.”

A third added: “Single malt whisky is the only type of whisky that I have drunk for years, usually a well known brand and a bottle normally lasts several months. This 10 yo Jura lasted a week! I always drink it neat, this tasted divine and went down so easily, making me want the next one almost immediately. I’ll continue to try other ones, but I’m not expecting to ever find a better single malt. As a bonus, it was considerably cheaper here than in my local big supermarket. My new ‘go to’ choice.”

However, some shoppers weren’t as impressed. One said: “A mellow and smooth scotch with no standout flavours (to me at least). A light sweet note from the Sherry cask and a bit of smoke at the very end but nothing too powerful. Pleasant drank neat, warm or cooled or mixed with coke or your mixer of choice. It’s an ok whisky but I don’t think it’s worth it at full price. ”

Another added: “A nice whisky, not really peaty, a more rounded whisky. Not my favourite but a good reliable whisky.”

That said, the Bottle Club deal on the Jura 10 Year Old Whisky, 70 Cl is well worth a look for seasoned whisky-lovers and new Scotch drinkers alike.
