HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -Artificial Intelligence is a tool that is being used more widely in a lot of places, one of them being the job market.

“A lot of companies now are doing video interviews powered by AI for candidates who make it past the resume stage,” Hala Nelson, JMU Professor and AI Author, said.

Nelson said the use of AI in the interview process can save companies a lot of time.

“In terms of freeing up time for employees and people who are doing the interviews and going through the paperwork and materials of all the candidates,” Nelson said.

A challenge with using AI for hiring is the possibility of bias included by programmers.

“For example, if you base your AI on successful employees of yours, the qualities they have and the jobs they perform. You have to make sure that pool of employees you trained AI are diverse enough and it reflects all kinds of experiences to make sure there is not a built-in bias,” Nelson said.

Nelson said if you are looking for a job, it is important to assume that AI could be used in the hiring process. She added to check the qualifications on your resume match the ones on the job description.

“So that if a machine is evaluating this it will rule out an employee without a human assessment,” Nelson said.

Candidates can use AI tools to practice for interviews, Nelson said.
