NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ/Gray News) – A National Park Service employee and his wife were killed in a crash on Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia.

According to the NPS, Troy Hagwood, 62, and his wife Cheryl Hagwood, 60, both died in the accident.

Dispatchers were notified of the crash shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday. It happened on Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 11 in Nelson County, Virginia.

Park rangers and first responders found the car on fire after it had crashed into a large tree.

Preliminary investigation indicates Hagwood was driving northbound when his vehicle struck a tree limb, left the road and hit a large tree before catching fire.

NPS said Troy Hagwood had been an NPS employee on the Blue Ridge Parkway for the past 16 years. He was off duty at the time of the accident.

Blue Ridge Parkway, known as “America’s favorite drive,” is a 469-mile roadway through the rugged mountains and pastoral landscapes of the Appalachian Highlands. It connects Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.
