CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A Cleveland teen rescued a family from a house fire Friday morning.
Cleveland Fire Department crews responded to two homes on fire on Cleveland’s west side around 11 a.m. on Sacramento Avenue.
Tyler Sowden, 16, said that he was nearby when he saw the flames and heard screaming along with a child on the roof of one of the burning homes.
Sowden ran and grabbed his father’s ladder to help a mother and her kids escape the flames and brought them down from the roof.
Cleveland firefighters said Sowden helped the mother, a young boy and baby girl from the second floor porch using the ladder.
Another 12-year-old boy had leaped from the second-floor porch in the back of the home.
Cleveland EMS transported all of them in stable condition.
The Cleveland Fire Department thanked Sowden and police officers for helping save the family and caught in the fire.
Cleveland authorities said police officers James Bellomy and Kerry Adams also saved an older neighbor and their dog while responding to the blaze.
Officials said 60 firefighters responded who eventually were able to extinguish the flames. One of the firefighters did suffer a shoulder injury.
The Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire that caused about $170,000 in damages to one of the homes.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
