NYPD officers shot and wounded a 29-year-old ex-con armed with a knife following a heated late-night foot chase through Brooklyn, police said Saturday.

The suspect, who is expected to survive, charged cops and acted like he had a gun before he was shot on E. 21st St. near Beverly Road following the two-block pursuit, NYPD Chief of Department John Chell said during an early morning briefing at the scene.

“This encounter took approximately four seconds,” Chell said. “Our officer had to defend himself. He fired his weapon multiple times, striking the perpetrator twice.”

The crazed scene unfolded about 11:40 p.m. Friday when cops were called to Duryea Place near Flatbush Ave. for a report of a man being stabbed in the street.

When they arrived, the officers found a man with a slash wound to the arm and the suspect holding a kitchen knife with a wooden handle.

“He takes off running,” Chell said about the suspect.

Police chased the man on foot for two blocks when “for an unknown reason, he stops, he turns, and he makes multiple intentional movements like he has a firearm and charges our police officer in a full sprint from approximately 20 feet away,” Chell said.

At least one officer fired at the 29-year-old suspect, hitting him twice in the torso, cops said. As they rendered aid, they recovered the kitchen knife and another blade, Chell said.

“Unknown reasons why he did this,” Chell said about the suspect’s actions.

EMS rushed the suspect to an area hospital, where he was in stable condition Saturday morning. His name was not immediately disclosed and criminal charges were pending.

The man he slashed was also taken to an area hospital for treatment, cops said.

The NYPD’s Force Investigations Division was probing the shooting, officials said.

Chell said the man cops shot is a convicted felon with four prior arrests, three of which were for assault. He was also arrested for possessing a firearm, he said.

The suspect’s last arrest was in January when he was accused of slashing two people in Manhattan with a pair of scissors, Chell said.

The Friday night shooting happened less than three weeks after Brooklyn cops shot and critically wounded a 33-year-old man with a box cutter involved in a wild “road rage” fight with another man, cops said.

That shooting happened on Avenue K near Utica Ave. in Flatlands, just two miles from where Friday’s clash occurred, police said.
