VALENCIA, Calif. (KPHO/Gray News) — A piece of roller coaster history has come to a reported end in Southern California.

According to the Orange County Register, Six Flags Magic Mountain has permanently closed the iconic Superman: Escape from Krypton ride.

Introduced in 1997, the coaster became the first to reach 100 mph and the first to exceed 400 feet in height.

The Superman ride had been closed since last September for maintenance.

A park official shared the ride was closed for refurbishment, but the necessary parts weren’t readily available. So, the most sensible option was to close it permanently.

“Some of the parts are obsolete,” park president Jeff Harris was quoted. “It’s really tough to even get parts to keep it alive.”

The Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom drop ride that shares Superman’s coaster tower is said to continue to operate once it reopens next month.
