BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – With this month being dryer than average, the risk of dangerous or destructive fires is increased.

West Virginia is currently in an outdoor burn ban, where burning is prohibited between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Bluefield Fire Department explained that if you do burn, make sure it’s wood only, maintain a wide area around where you burn, and have a water source close by. They also shared some warnings with WVVA regarding the risk of ignoring these rules in these dry conditions.

“Fires that get out of control, that spread, you know, can easily catch the outside of a house on fire. Embers floating can catch…shingled roofs on fire, stuff like that. So, we try and encourage people to…be responsible with their burning,” said Rodji Seldon, a fireman with the department.
