BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -Things got down and derby at the Mercer Mall on Saturday with an annual race that pits local Cub Scouts against each other.
It’s all part of the Mountain Dominion District’s annual “Pinewood Derby” where Cub Scouts race cars they carved from a block of wood, teaching them valuable woodworking skills in the process. The District has been holding these races for around three decades, but this is the first year they’ve held it in the Mercer Mall.
Those who win first, second, and third place will continue to the Buckskin Council’s race in Charleston. The scouts we spoke to say they enjoyed this chance to race their cool cars and would recommend more join them here next year.
“It’s so fun to build a car and to race…” explains Hayden Cook, a Pack 92 Cub Scout and a second year Pinewood Derby racer, “…like, putting the wheels on and just seeing how far it could go and putting weights on, and, like, designing it. So fun.”
“I signed up for the Cub Scouts about a few months ago, and now I’m here,” says Thomas Gill, also from Pack 92.
We asked him if he was having fun so far.
“Yeah!” says Gill.
The Mountain Dominion District has many other events planned, including a similar race with boats. If you’d like to find where your local Cub Scout Pack is located, you can find more information on the Buckskin Council’s website.
