DETROIT (WXYZ) – An apartment explosion in Detroit sent 12 people to the hospital, including six children, with some in critical condition.

The explosion happened around 4 a.m. Monday, leaving the apartment building destroyed.

Crews arrived at the scene and saw people jumping out of the windows to get out of the building.

Fire officials said 12 people were rescued from the wreckage, including six adults and six children.

Three of the victims are considered in critical condition: a 30-year-old man with severe burns to 90% of his body, a 27-year-old woman with burns to 40% of her body, and a 3-year-old girl with burns to 15% of her body.

Fire officials said the other nine people had scrapes and cuts but were not seriously hurt. Those people were treated and released from the hospital.

Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms said crews are working to demolish the building right away as the remainder of the building is not stable.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
