(CNN) – New images from the James Webb Space Telescope are showing auroras around Neptune for the first time.

These images could not be seen by earlier telescopes or space crafts.

The near-infrared spectrograph on the James Webb Space Telescope captured the glow of aurora activity.

In a study published on Wednesday in the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists say unique auroras are visible on either side of Neptune’s equator.

This discovery will allow scientists to study aspects of Neptune that have previously been out of reach.
