GEORGETOWN, Texas — The son of a former Williamson County district judge has pleaded guilty to the murder of his father and mother in January 2024. He will spend the rest of his life in prison.
On Jan. 8, 2024, Williamson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies responded to a 911 call from former judge Seth Bryan Carnes’ daughter. She reported that her father shot her grandfather, 74-year-old retired judge Alfred Carnes. When deputies arrived on scene, they detained Seth Carnes. Upon entering the home, they found both Alfred Carnes and his wife, Susan, dead from gunshot wounds. Deputies also located and seized the shotgun that was used.
According to the WCSO, Seth Carnes – who lived on his parents property – confessed to deputies at the scene that he had killed his parents. An affidavit stated that Seth Carnes later told investigators he didn’t know what happened, but he knew he shot his parents and that he used a Remington 870 shotgun that was next to his nightstand. He also allegedly said he believed his mother was trying to put a sleeping pill in his mouth that he did not want to take.
Seth Carnes was charged with capital murder in connection with his parents’ deaths. His trial was set to begin the week of April 7, 2025, but he pleaded guilty on March 31, concluding the case. Sentencing was automatic to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
“Judge Carnes and his wife, Susan, were beloved members of the community where they lived and served. The loss of their lives in this manner devastated not only their family but many within the community who loved and respected them,” Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick said.
“While nothing can undo the profound loss suffered by the family of Judge and Mrs. Carnes, this outcome brings a measure of justice and finality to a deeply tragic situation. We hope this resolution can offer some small degree of peace to the family members as they continue to heal.”
