SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio senior is breaking barriers in the Alamo City after being accepted into a prestigious Ivy League university.
Sarah Johnston, who attends IDEA South Flores College Preparatory, is now the school’s first-ever student to be accepted to Harvard University. In total, Sarah was accepted to three Ivy League schools including Brown University, Dartmouth College and Harvard University. Sarah has ultimately decided to attend Harvard this fall.


“Sarah’s story is one of perseverance, leadership, and a commitment to excellence. She is a shining example of what happens when passion and hard work collide,” the school said in a press release.
School officials describe Sarah as a true role model who is “breaking barriers for her family while inspiring the next generation of students at IDEA South Flores and beyond.”
IDEA South Flores also posted a video when officials announced Sarah’s major accomplishment to the entire school.
School officials said Sarah is dedicated to bridging the gaps in communication – a subject that is personal and significantly important, as her mother is deaf. Sarah is also fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), is an active member of her church and even taught ASL to parishioners in an effort to supports her mom and the Deaf community.
According to the press release, “Her experiences have shaped her unique perspective, and she is committed to making a positive impact on the world, starting with her education. Sarah embodies IDEA’s mission to ensure 100% of its graduates go to and through college. We are so excited for her and look forward to watching her continue to achieve greatness as she embarks on this new chapter at Harvard University.”
Sarah plans to study neuroscience with a focus in degenerative neuro diseases.
