Southern W.Va. Disc Golf Club holds first tournament of the year

PRINCETON, W. Va. -In Mercer County, people welcomed the spring season and the warmer weather that comes with it in a somewhat unique way: using a disc golf tournament. Disc golf, as its name implies, is like traditional golf, but played with a disc instead of a ball.

The Southern West Virginia Disc Golf Club plays many courses set up in our area, with multiple in Mercer County alone. These rounds have garnered a following, bringing people from all the way from the Charleston area to take part.

Their “Speed Limit 1 Tournament” is their first event of the year, with around thirty people coming out to the Gardner Center in Princeton to compete for a trophy and cash prize. We asked one organizer what makes this such a popular sport for so many people.

“Man, it’s the community. Just seems like everybody in disc golf knows everybody. If you look, everybody’s kind of an athlete in disc golf. We like to get out, hike, and, you know, hiking can get boring sometimes; why now throw a frisbee while you’re doing it?” says Justin Radford, a board member with the Club.

Radford encourages people to go to the Southern West Virginia Disc Golf Club Facebook group or go to DDM Disc Golf at 36769 Gov. G.C. Perry Highway, Bluefield, Va. to reach out with any questions they may have.
