Dominic Smith has rejoined the Yankees.

The first baseman/outfielder signed a minor league contract with the team on Monday, the Yankees announced. Smith had been with the Bombers as a non-roster invitee in spring training, but he opted out toward the end with the Yankees’ lineup and bench overloaded with fellow left-handed hitters.

Smith, 29, slashed .297/.289/.568 with three home runs and 12 RBI for the Yankees this spring. On Monday, he was assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

A Met from 2017-2022, Smith tallied 32 homers, 125 RBI and a .787 OPS from 2019-2021. He’s played just one full big league season since that stretch, though, falling out of favor with the Mets before joining the Nationals, Cubs, Rays, Red Sox and Reds. The last four teams all employed Smith last season as he tried to bounce back from right hamate surgery, which he underwent in January 2024, though he only reached the majors with Boston and Cincinnati.

Back in spring training, Smith said that his right hand had bothered him and possibly been broken for years prior to surgery. This spring was the first time since the surgery that Smith felt his hand was at full strength.
