COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Maryland has found its next head basketball coach. Buzz Williams, who led Texas A&M to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, is set to take over the Terrapins program following Kevin Willard’s departure for Villanova.
Williams, 52, coached at Virginia Tech from 2014 to 2019. He now joins the Big Ten after a successful tenure in the SEC, where he built Texas A&M into a consistent postseason contender.
The Aggies reached the Round of 32 in this year’s NCAA Tournament, marking their second straight trip to that stage. Williams initially faced challenges in College Station, posting a 16-14 record in his first season in 2019-20 before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the campaign short. The following year, A&M struggled with disruptions, finishing 8-10. However, the program turned the corner in 2021-22, reaching the NIT Championship game before securing three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
Now, Williams inherits a Maryland program that just advanced to the Sweet 16 under Willard. Tasked with maintaining that momentum, he steps into a competitive Big Ten landscape with a reported six-year deal in hand.
