PRINCETON, W. Va. -Community Connection’s Camp Mariposa is working to help kids affected by substance use disorder through education and healing. However, it is a free camp, meaning they rely on outside funding to operate.

Now, they’re getting a $38,480 grant to help fund this effort. This comes after applying for the West Virginia First Foundation’s inaugural “Opportunity Grant.”

In a press release, the Foundation’s executive director says Community Connections shares their mission of empowering communities and combatting substance use disorder, calling their dedication to creating positive change “inspiring.” The program director of Camp Mariposa, Eden Scruggs, says this money couldn’t have come at a better time.

“…You need funding, you need money to have the supplies you need on hand and to make it work, so it’s instrumental in keeping our program going. We have a grant actually that’s running out now (we’re at the end of that grant cycle), and this grant is going to help continue for the rest of the year and into next year,” says Scruggs.

Scruggs says she’s grateful for this support, but says they will continue to need grant funding and support from the community after the funds are spent.

She says those interested in helping should give Community Connections a call at 304-913-4956 or email her directly at eden.scruggs@strongcommunities.org. You can also support their kids art gallery fundraiser that will be held at the Dream Bean on May 17th.
