MONTGOMERY TOWNSHIP, Md. (KYW) – Drivers are zig-zagging down a road in Maryland, but not to avoid a pothole.

A new road designed to get drivers to slow down has created a lot of confusion for the people who live in Montgomery Township.

Residents at first believed the road design was a joke. However, the design is a legitimate calming measure by police to get drivers to slow down.

“It’s awkward. It’s weird. I’m not used to it,” resident Ashley Wyckoff said.

Neighbors agree that speeding is a big problem on Grays Lane.

Many also agree that the new street design was not the best way to address the speeding.

“I don’t see how this is going to slow down traffic at all,” resident William King said.

The yellow and white curved lines that run along two blocks of the road were painted on Friday.

A Facebook post from the police department said signage, along with safety devices called “delineators” will follow.

Most drivers appeared to stay within the lines, but not all of them did.

Mike Dilorenzo, who lives near the road, said the neighborhood was not given a heads up about the police department’s plans.

“They were literally out here yesterday and just put up,” he said. “And people coming out of their houses like, ‘What’s going on?’ And that’s how we found out.”

Montgomery Township Police addressed community complaints in a follow-up Facebook comment saying the new measure was discussed at length with township experts, adding, in part, “Our highway safety officers and traffic engineers have determined that this is the best course of action for the area to ensure the safety of the local residents.”

“This is not the design to go,” Dilorenzo said. “There are other options out there, and I think they should have gone that way.”

Some neighbors are now hoping the township has a change of heart.
