(InvestigateTV) — The American Heart Association says access to an automated external defibrillator, or AED, improves chances for survival when a heart stops.

However, our investigation found that the one thing that can shock a student back to life is optional in many states.

As of February 2025, fewer than half of U.S. states have legislation mandating AEDs in all schools, while nearly 35 million students attend schools in states with no legislative requirements.

In Washington state, a mother has made it her mission to honor her late son by making sure no other parent experiences what she went through.

Reporter Mia Villanueva shows us how she took her grief and turned it into lifesaving work.
