HICO, W.Va. – A year ago today an EF2 tornado hit Hico in Fayette county.
According to the survey summary from the National Weather Service, estimated peak wind was 130 mph with a path length of 1.18 miles and a path width of 300 yards. There were no fatalities, but the survey lists one injury.
The deputy chief of the Nuttall Volunteer Fire Department, Rick Lewis says between 13 and 15 homes were damaged by the storm in total. He says that half of those homes are now destroyed.
“We had some folks that were actually in their bathtubs seeing the twister take the ceiling fan right out of their roof. Then it took the roof as well so extra blessed that they didn’t get hurt,” said Lewis.
Our Robert Castillo and Jessica Nuzzo visited Hico the day following the tornado to survey the damage.
Following the weather event, the community rallied together to help their neighbors who lost everything.
The devastating event serves as a reminder to many that a tornado can happen in these mountains and that everyone should stay weather aware when tornado watches and warning are issued.
