HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — As the weather continues to warm up and the sun is out longer, the Virginia Department of Transportation said more motorcycles might be on the roadway.
Ken Slack, the VDOT Staunton district communications manager, said paying attention to the road is always important, but taking extra care to look at mirrors and the road can help save a life. He said warmer weather might attract pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists around roadways, and people driving standard automobiles play an important role in the safety of all drivers.
”It’s easy to forget that the roadways are also for motorcycles, bicyclists and pedestrians,” Slack said. “We need people to share the roads. Be patient with other road users because not everybody is going to be as fast or as slow as you are. Definitely give folks room to safely use the roads just the way you would appreciate having.”
Slack said distracted driving is an issue many motorists face. Whether it’s a cell phone in hand, kids in the backseat or eating fast food while driving, Slack said people’s attention off the road can limit reaction time and make it harder to avoid a crash. He said protecting yourself while driving will help protect people around the vehicle, which is especially important for people not surrounded by the metal frame of a car who are on the roadway, like pedestrians and motorcyclists.
