PHILADELPHIA, N.Y. (WWNY/Gray News) – A barn fire in upstate New York claimed the lives of at least 200 farm animals over the weekend.
The fire happened on Sunday at about 9 p.m. at the Leuze Dairy Farm on Elm Ridge Road in the small town of Philadelphia.
Owners say at least 200 animals were killed, mostly heifers and steers.
Farm co-owner Matt Leuze said the fire is a huge hit to business and left them with about one-third of the animals they had.
Leuze said cleanup won’t begin until at least Thursday, when the insurance company comes out to do its investigation.
In total, he believes damages could reach between $2-3 million.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
