CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – In what the Trump administration is calling ‘Liberation Day’, President Trump laid out his plans to impose tariffs on all foreign trading partners.
“When those prices go up, just remember, it was Donald Trump’s liberation policies that are actually increasing taxes on America,” said Democratic Virginia Senator, Mark Warner.
Virginia U.S. Senator Mark Warner is not a fan of the Trump administration’s plan for sweeping tariffs.
“Who’s going to pay for it? You and me in higher prices,” said Warner.
More specifically, Warner worries about what effects this will have on the relationship with one of America’s closes allies, Canada.
“It’s why I was very anxious to join with my friend and colleague Tim Kaine and say, let’s at least get rid of the excuse of why Trump is using tariffs to attack Canada,” said Warner.
Starting a trade war, he says, will affect Virginians’ wallets because the commonwealth imports billions in products from our northern neighbor.
” I point out that, you know, we send China, I’m sorry, Canada about $3.3 billion in Virginia products. We import about $3.2 billion from Canada to Virginia,” said Warner.
Either way, Warner says these tariffs can be seen as an attack on Canada.
“I don’t understand how we can make Canada an enemy,” said Warner. “You can’t put this relationship back on an even level. This will affect our relations for years to come.”
