The Westlake High School alum spent his first three NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

AUSTIN, Texas — A former Texas Longhorns and Westlake quarterback has a new NFL home.

Sam Ehlinger is signing with the Denver Broncos, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It will be Ehlinger’s first new NFL team after he spent his first three NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

A four-star recruit out of Westlake, Ehlinger played for the Longhorns from 2017-2020, starting all four seasons on the Forty Acres. He finished his Longhorns career with a 62.5% completion percentage, 11,436 passing yards and 94 passing touchdowns. He also ran for 1,903 yards and 33 touchdowns, with 16 coming during his impressive 2018 season.

Following his college career, Ehlinger was taken in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Colts. Over three seasons, he appeared in eight games, completing 64-of-101 passes for 573 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He started three games during the 2022 season, losing all three.

Details of Ehlinger’s contract were not revealed, but multiple outlets report that the Broncos are giving him a one-year deal. He will join a quarterback room that consists of second-year starter Bo Nix, who finished third in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2024, and Jarrett Stidham, whom he will likely compete with for the second-string spot on the depth chart.
