Once it’s completed, the development is expected to have around 3,000 residential units.

AUSTIN, Texas — A new development in northeast Austin is one step closer to becoming a reality.

On Saturday, a public groundbreaking was held for the Colony Park Sustainable Community development, which will be located on city-owned land on Colony Loop Drive. The official groundbreaking for the development was held during a private event Thursday, with public officials including Austin Mayor Kirk Watson present.

Once it’s completed, the development is expected to have around 3,000 residential units, as well as approximately 230,000 square feet of mixed-use office and institutional space and around 130,000 square feet of mixed-use retail space.

“We’ll have lots of parks, over 42 acres of parks and open space, new homes, spaces for retailers, offices, apartments, of course, Central Health Health and Wellness Center and it’s all adjacent to the Colony Park District Park, which is a 90 acre city owned park with a pool and the Turner Roberts Recreation Center,” Colony Park Senior Vice President of Marketing Jessica Reynolds said at Saturday’s event.

Crews will begin their work focusing on street and public utility infrastructure construction. An expected completion date for the project has not yet been announced.
