DALLAS — State Representative Rafael Anchía, D-Dallas, wants some of the largest agencies in Texas to come up with severe weather plans to not only keep Texans safe but also help the agencies themselves survive a disaster.
The Dallas Democrat said it doesn’t matter how you feel about climate change because even the Office of the Texas State Climatologist at Texas A&M University said our weather events are becoming more intense and frequent, from hurricanes to floods to droughts.
“What I’m asking the 15 most important state agencies to do is be proactive, and sort of take that Scouts’ motto ‘be prepared,’” Rep. Anchía told us on Inside Texas Politics. “And we want them to present these plans every two years, ensuring that we have a forward-thinking strategy to assess our vulnerabilities, protect critical systems, minimize financial loss, and importantly, stand up the agencies once again after the disaster so it can be responsive to the people of Texas.”
Some of the 15 agencies include the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Agriculture, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Rep. Anchía said he expects the bill to make it out of committee and the Texas House.
