THE TWO VIRGINIAS – Residents in the Two Virginias are becoming victim to a new wave of scams.

The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about scams going around involving Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards.

Officers say they have received several reports of people having their EBT cards compromised. Reports are showing unauthorized transactions being made out of the area, and some victims have had the entire amount withdrawn from their account.

Officers say in order to protect your EBT card, keep your PIN secret, change it regularly, and check your account for unauthorized activity. Also, be vigilant when using the card, examining card readers for tampering and covering the keypad when entering your PIN. Report any unauthorized transactions or suspicious activity to your local department of Social Services.

They ask you to head to the Virginia Department of Social Services website for more information.

Virginia is not alone in seeing this scam.

West Virginia Office of EBT offers similar tips to protecting your benefits and acknowledges that these scams occur.
