CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A new procedure is now being offered at UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center to help men dealing with bladder issues caused by enlarged prostates.

“It’s a very common disease. about half of us have prostate growth and about half of those develop symptoms,” said UVA Health Urologist Doctor Gregg Eure.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH, is when an enlarged prostate puts pressure on the urethra, causing bladder issues. Dr. Eure says many men avoid treatment because of side effects.

“It’s much tougher to help them recover things if they wait too long,” Eure said.

BPH is progressive, so catching it early is crucial.

Now with a new treatment option, called aquablation, it uses a water jet to remove excess tissue. It is a more precise way to fight the root of the problem.

“There’s no cutting, no sutures, no lasers, and you’re safely and effectively removing that tissue with less side effects,” Dr. Eure said.

Dr. Eure understands how nerve-wracking visits can be, but he says it doesn’t have to.

“Just because you’re aging, you don’t have to put up with it,” Dr. Eure said. “There are very effective treatment options. So, come in.”

Dr. Eure says this procedure is 85% to 90% effective.
