
BUCKHANNON, W.Va (WDTV) – A man was arrested Monday morning after police say he caused a power outage after crashing his car into power lines while driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Upshur Country Sheriff’s Department responded to a motor vehicle collision near 32220 Old Elkins Road on Monday. April 7, 2025.
The investigation showed that the suspect’s vehicle exited the roadway at a high rate of speed, struck a tree, multiple mailboxes, a chain-link fence and gate, and a power pole before coming to a rest hanging on the power lines of a Mon Power pole. Officials say the accident caused a power outage in Upshur County.
The driver was identified as Joshua Paul Woods.
Officials say Woods admitted to drinking a 12-pack of alcoholic beverages and being under the influence of alcohol.
He was also exhibiting extremely slurred speech, officials say. Woods was transported to the hospital for injuries he sustained due to the crash.
The Buckhannon Police Department, Upshur County EMS and Buckhannon fire department also responded to the scene. Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
