CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – UVA Sustainability is launching dozens of events, offering people simple ways to help take care of the planet and protect local resources.

“This year more than ever, it’s really important to connect the community around our shared values and our love and respect for the planet,” said Shannon Sahs, outreach specialist for UVA Sustainability.

Sahs says it’s about building habits that last and building them together. The organization is promoting 60 events across Charlottesville, all designed to help people take action for the environment.

That includes tree planting, clothing swaps, recycling drives, and more.

“We have limited resources on our planet, so it’s really important that we use them wisely,” Sahs says. “I think that it’s really important to bring solutions to the community rather than fear.”

Even if you can’t make it to an event, Sahs says it starts at home.

“You can opt to hang dry your clothes rather than using the dryer,” Sahs said. “Turn your hot water down just a little bit, maybe to the warm setting instead of super hot, and recycle and compost all you can.”

Sahs wants people to remember, taking care of the planet isn’t a one-time effort.

“There are little actions that everyone can take throughout the year, to make a cumulative impact and really make a difference in our community,” Sahs said.
