AUSTIN, Texas — Central Texas nonprofit Con Mi Madre held its prom-themed Corazon Awards on Friday, and KVUE’s Yvonne Nava served as emcee.
The organization, which means “with my mother” in English, partners with school districts to help empower young Latinas and get them ready for college.
It provides resources and dual-generational programs to help both mothers and their daughters in each step of a child’s educational journey.
“Most of our students will be the first in their family to go to college. So having the involvement of the parents and having an organization that walks you through that process of how do you identify what you want to do in the future?,” said Dr. Johanna Moya Fabregas, executive director of Con Mi Madre.
“How do you convince yourself that you are college material, that you have what it takes? There’s a lot of work that goes into unearthing that self-esteem.”
Former KVUE Daybreak anchor Olga Campos, as well as Siete Family Foods and Hector and Gloria Lopez foundation COO/CFO Veronica Rosas Fernandez, were all awarded for their active roles in the community.
Money raised will benefit the programs that serve Con Mi Madre mothers and daughters. To learn more about the nonprofit, click here.
