VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WESH) – A day at the beach turned into a nightmare for a 33-year-old Florida man after deputies say a driver ran him over while he was sunbathing.

Coleson Janey, 33, was sunbathing at a beach Saturday morning in Ormond Beach. As he lay on the sand, deputies say a 61-year-old driver veered off the travel lanes to back into a parking space, running over Janey’s body and head.

Janey says he was lying face down when he was jolted awake by the tire running over his head.

“I was just screaming, screaming my head off, screaming bloody murder, of course, because I was just in so much pain,” he said.

Witnesses immediately called 911, and emergency crews rushed Janey to the hospital. The 33-year-old sustained several injuries, including a scratch on his eye, a bruised face and more severe damage to the rest of his body. He underwent surgery on his leg Sunday.

“So, now, I have a forearm that’s broken in two places – both bones in the forearm, clean break. And then, my femur, which was broken, that they just had to put a titanium rod in,” Janey said.

Janey is facing a long and painful recovery, but choosing to focus on the positives, he is hopeful it will be a full recovery.

“What I’ve heard is three or four months of recovery time,” he said. “I’m just thankful to be alive and to be able to walk again at some point.”

Deputies say the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with the investigation. She was cited with careless driving and showed no signs of impairment, according to deputies.

Janey’s family is surprised the driver is not being charged with reckless driving, but that could change, as the investigation has not been completed.
