Spring is officially in full swing as all of the gorgeous flowers begin to bloom and the lighter nights are finally upon us. One particularly cheap and cheerful flower you are likely to see in all of the supermarkets right now, in all types of vibrant colours, during its prime time, is tulips.

Tulips tick the boxes of being both affordable and beautiful to look at, making it the perfect spring flower. However, there is one major downfall to the colourful blooms and that is how easily they begin to droop out of their vase. Unfortunately, this can make the entire arrangement appear drab and flat.

However, like most minor lifestyle problems these days, there is a brilliant yet highly unusual life-hack solution waiting for you on TikTok. According to social media users, there are quite a few ways you can stop your tulips from appearing so sad and while the methods may be rather bizarre, they appear to work wonders.

From using a 2p coin at the bottom of your vase to transform your flowers to using a pin to prick each individual stem before placing them in water, people are well and truly desperate to find out what they can do to salvage their gorgeous tulips.

2p coin

Nicola Roy, previously of the record, has tried out these popular hacks so you don’t have to. Read below for her thoughts to find out how she got on.

Picking up two bunches of tulips, Nicola proceeded to test out both hacks at once on the separate bunches to see if either of them would work.

Detailing the process, she explained: “The first hack is simple – all you have to do is place a 2p coin at the bottom of the vase, before adding in the water and the flowers.

“And the second involves using a pin to prick each of the flowers at the base before arranging them.

“Taking each of the bouquets out of the packaging, I sliced the stems diagonally just to give them an extra boost and put the first bunch in the coin vase, then poked holes in the remaining flowers and arranged them as best I could.”

Nicola added: “I wasn’t expecting an instant result, but I still found myself disappointed when both bunches immediately started flopping out the sides of the vases.

“Still, I thought I’d better give it some time, so I placed them on my coffee table and then later on the windowsill so they could get some of the lovely evening sun that was streaming in.

“Just before I went to bed, I gave them another quick glance and saw that the hacks were taking their sweet time to work, as both bunches still looked incredibly sad.

“So you can imagine my shock when I came through the following morning to find that the tulips in the coin vase were now sitting entirely upright, except for a few leaves which were easy to trim off.”

Sharing her disbelief, Nicola revealed how the 2p coin had helped to save her flowers.

She said: “I truly had no idea how this had worked, but a quick online search told me that the coin supposedly acts as antimicrobial agent, reducing the microorganisms in the water to keep the flowers fresh.

“As for the other bunch of tulips with the holes poked in them, they had straightened up a little – but not nearly as much as the first bouquet.”

“I was incredibly pleased with how well the coin hack worked and will be telling anyone who will listen in the future.

“A day later and they’re looking bigger and brighter than ever, so hopefully it continues to keep them looking their absolute best.”

Nicola also discovered some other tulip-reviving trips on Tiktok that promise good results.

One of these involved putting ice in the vase water before adding the flowers. Another claimed that mixing white vinegar in with the water would prolong the lifespan of the tulips.
