MONROE COUNTY, W.Va. – As high school seniors gear up to finish their K-12 education, the community is ensuring their graduation is both safe and one to remember. Friday through Sunday, it was buckets on buckets as ballers took to the hardwood.
It’s all for the “Maverick Hoops Basketball Tournament,” with the goal of fundraising for the celebration to follow this year’s graduation, which is part of the James Monroe High School Class of 2025 Project Graduation’s efforts.
This year boasted 54 teams competing, as well as 102 games over the course of three days at Mountain View School, Peterstown Middle School, and James Monroe High School.
One of the event’s organizers, Judy Ann Meadows, said that Project Graduation is a chance for seniors to celebrate safely after their commencement ceremony, where they spend the night at the high school to play games, win prizes, and have one last high school celebration.
Meadows noted that she’s known some of these faces since they were children, so seeing them blossom into young adults by hosting these fundraisers is extra special.
“I teach kindergarten, and I coach at the high school level so I’ve had some of these kids since they were five years old, and to me it’s just a wonderful thing that we can do for them and I think they really appreciate it,” said Meadows.
James Monroe High School Class of 2025 Project Graduation’s next scheduled event is a golf tournament on April 26th.
