WASHINGTON — A grocery store in Scotland had an unexpected arrival over the weekend after a husband helped his wife deliver their baby in the supermarket’s parking lot.
Asda, a supermarket chain in the U.K. shared details of the baby’s speedy arrival in a Facebook post on Sunday. According to the post, the couple were on their way to the maternity hospital when they realized the baby had other plans.
The husband, whose name is Michael, called the hospital and pulled over to the nearest safe spot.
“I saw the bright lights of the Asda car park and thought it would be perfect spot as the ambulance would find its way to it quite easily,” Michael said, according to the post.
The call handler helped Michael deliver the nine-pound baby in the reclined front passenger seat while parked outside of the grocery store in Huntly.

“It was a wee bit scary, but it was okay. The guy on the phoned told us what to do; he was great,” Michael said.
According to the post, the ambulance arrived within five minutes and took his wife Dinara and the newborn son to the hospital while Michael followed them. Michael told Asda the baby went without a name for three days before the couple settled on the name William.
“We did consider George because of the Asda connection but we went with William in the end!” he said in the Facebook post.
The store manager, upon finding out of the baby’s arrival, took a flower bouquet to the couple’s home and invited them to the store so she could give them a “hamper of baby goodies.”
“We just wanted to do something a bit special … it’s not every day that a baby’s born in your car park. William was just beautiful and he was giving me smiles. I was delighted to meet them,” Linda, the store manager, said in the Facebook post.
