(InvestigateTV) — The average electricity bill in the U.S. each month is around $137, according to Home Energy Club, an energy comparison website.

Nathan Schluter, a content manager for Home Energy Club, said electricity bills across the U.S. are typically billed the same way.

“You basically pay for your energy in kilowatt hours, which is a measurement of how much energy used over time,” Schluter explained. “So, every company is going to charge a rate per kilowatt hour. And that means that the more energy you use, the more money you spend basically. So, even if you don’t live in a deregulated area, the nice thing is you can cut down on your usage to save on money.”

He said one way to cut down on the electricity bill is to keep the thermostat set at a mild temperature – meaning less energy will be used.

Schluter said some savings options may require an investment but could have a huge impact.

“Some of the biggest ones are going to be, like, investing in solar panels,” he shared. “If you can get solar panels on your home, that really reduces your reliance on the power grid, which means you’re using less electricity that you have to pay for, and it can help you out quite a bit as far as reducing your energy costs.”

Another way to save is by upgrading your heating and cooling system to a more energy-efficient model.

“If you can invest in a more energy-efficient AC unit, something that’s Energy Star certified, that can save a lot of money on your monthly energy costs,” he said.

He said there are a lot of other key appliances that also have that Energy Star certification including dishwashers, washers and dryers, and water heaters.

Schulter suggested checking home insulation. Re-insulating a home can be costly but may lead to big savings.

The U.S. Department of Energy has many additional money saving tips on their website.
