COOKE COUNTY, Texas — A Cooke County Game Warden rescued 10 University of North Texas students after they were blown off course on Lake Ray Roberts, officials said.
Officials responded to a 911 call after a group in two canoes and five paddle boards lost control of their vessels in strong winds, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said in a press release.
The group drifted toward the center of the lake after losing control, the release states.
“Clinging to paddle boards and panicked, they called 911,” the release states.
The game warden launched a boat with paramedics, located the students and rescued them, officials said. All students were safely brought to shore and one person was taken to a hospital with hypothermia, the release states.
“We are thankful for this outcome, but it could have ended very differently,” the release states. “Always check the weather, wear a life jacket and understand your limits on the water.”
