RIPLEY, W.Va. – Governor Patrick Morrisey signed Senate Bill 199 into law today, surrounded by students in the city of Ripley.
The bill gives more credence to teachers when it comes to how students are disciplined in their classrooms.
“We cannot truly excel as a state without a world-class education system, and that means empowering parents, supporting teachers, rewarding merit, and ensuring that every child has what they need to succeed,” said Governor Morrisey. “This legislation provides teachers with the tools to regain control of the classroom and ensure safe learning environments for our kids.”
The bill states “The teacher shall stand in the place of the parent(s), guardian(s), or custodian(s) in exercising authority over the school and has control of all students enrolled in the school from the time they reach the school until they have returned to their respective homes.”
West Virginia continues to rank at the bottom when it comes to education compared with other states.
Locally, public school enrollment continues to decline as private schools expand .
