As the warmer weather approaches, wasps are on the lookout for locations to establish nests, causing worry for homeowners.
Despite being commonly linked to summer gatherings and rubbish bins, early spring is actually when wasps become most audacious, silently infiltrating homes while windows remain shut and attics undisturbed.
During springtime, wasps search for serene, secluded corners in homes to construct their nests, including lofts, wall cavities, boiler cupboards, and spare rooms.
Once established, wasps turn into problematic and unwelcome residents that are difficult to eliminate.

However, there is a simple and cost-effective method to deter these pests from taking over your space.
Chris Hutton, a storage specialist and proprietor of Adam’s SelfStore, suggests using spent coffee grounds as an efficient and free repellent.
Hutton explained, “Wasps have a surprisingly strong sense of smell,” and “they rely heavily on scent to identify potential nesting areas, and they’re incredibly sensitive to certain odours, coffee being one of them.”

He added that the aroma emitted by burning coffee grounds overwhelms their senses, rendering an area inhospitable or unsuitable for habitation, reports the Express.
Additionally, Hutton highlighted the method’s benefits, stating, “They’re non-toxic, safe around pets, and don’t involve filling your home with strong chemicals.”
For those interested in trying this approach, it’s advised to collect used coffee grounds after your morning coffee and ensure they’re thoroughly dried out.

Start by placing a spoonful of coffee grounds in a fireproof container, such as an old metal dish, ceramic ramekin or ashtray.
Ignite the grounds carefully using a match or lighter and allow them to smoulder, much like incense.
The slow burn emits a potent, smoky scent that wasps find overpowering.
For optimal results, use this deterrent in areas where wasps are likely to enter or investigate: loft spaces, window sills, attic hatches, near extractor fans, or even the corners of quiet rooms.
This technique is also effective in outdoor spaces. So, if you’re hosting a family barbecue and notice some uninvited buzzing guests, take the coffee grounds outside and burn them around your table.
