DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) – Hundreds of John Deere employees were laid off Friday at two plants in Iowa.

According to Iowa’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, 310 workers between plants at Dubuque and Davenport have found themselves without a job due to the mass layoffs.

According to the site, notice was given to the employees in June.

Ninety-nine employees have been let go from the plant in Dubuque and 211 employees were let go from the plant in Davenport.

John Deere says its sales have dropped 20% and employment cuts have been required across the company despite beating earning expectations in the third quarter.

“This community, the Quad Cities, is heavily Deere-based with four plants in the area. So, when they take these kinds of hits, it doesn’t just affect Deere, it affects a lot of people,” Matthew Shiltz, a now-former John Deere employee, shared.

Shiltz says he knows when the severance package from John Deere runs out, there will be trouble ahead.

The next round of John Deere layoffs in Iowa are expected to happen on Sept. 20, involving about 300 workers at the Waterloo plant.
