BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -A new exhibit has been unveiled at the Bluefield Arts Center’s Paine Gallery, featuring the talents of a Bluefield native with a love of the outdoors.

A member of the Bluefield Arts and Revitalization Corporation says they chose to feature Stephen Carroll’s artwork based on his outstanding craftsmanship and his ability to capture so many sights familiar to the people in the Bluefield area.

Carroll works in a variety of mediums, from oil paintings, to drawings, to metal sculptures, and even a wooden clock that he carved. He tells us that he first got started in metal art after making steel hinges for a barn door. He uses his talents in multiple mediums to create some of things he sees in nature, taking inspiration for many of these works from his trout fishing expeditions.

When BARC invited him to show his works, he was initially worried that he wouldn’t have enough to fill the Paine Gallery, but soon found he had the opposite problem, with more works of art in his portfolio than the gallery could display. He says the gallery has attracted more than a hundred people since it opened, with many old friends from his hometown stopping by to show their support.

“It was awesome. It was really awesome that there was people that I haven’t seen in probably forty-five years that came on Thursday night, so it was just really cool to reconnect with them, and I met a lot of new people and got to, you know, connect with them, and so I ended up getting some new friends and that’s cool,” says Carroll.

If you would like to see Carroll’s works for yourself, they will be on display in Bluefield Arts Center until the end of the month. The Paine Gallery is open weekdays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm but will be closed on Labor Day.
