HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A man will spend 40 years behind bars after pleading guilty of 2nd degree murder in Cabell County on Tuesday.

Peter Vanmaasdam III, 31, was arrested last September for the death of Mary Deel, whose body was found near railroad tracks in Huntington.

The criminal complaint stated Vanmaasdam shot Deel with a shotgun in a home, set fire to her body and placed it in a “highly vegetated area” near the railroad tracks.

On Tuesday, Cabell County Judge Howard sentenced Vanmaasdam to 40 years in prison for 2nd degree murder. This will run consecutively with a 1-5 year sentence for concealment of a body.

Judge Howard dismissed a firearm count and a plea agreement was reached on the murder.
