Over 400 jobs are at risk at a heat pumps manufacturer in Livingston, according to the local MP.

Labour’s Gregor Poynton raised the alarm about the potential losses at the Mitsubishi Electric plant during a debate at Westminster.

The Livingston site has been manufacturing air conditioning units for over thirty years and producing heat pumps since 2009.

The company website says the firm is the largest heat pump manufacturer in the UK and employs over 1500 people.

Poynton, the newly-elected Livingston MP, raised the prospect of job losses directly with Scotland Secretary Ian Murray.

He said: “This week we have heard the concerning news from Mitsubishi Electric, a plant in my constituency, that is looking to reduce its workforce from its current complement of 1600 by 440 jobs.

“This is a highly skilled workforce creating world-leading products, air-sourced heat pumps and air conditioning units which are absolutely vital as we look to decarbonise our economy in the future.

“However, [through] no fault of their own, due to short term economic pressures, they have seen their order book fall away.”

Murray said he was “really sorry” to hear of the difficulties and committed to a meeting with the firm.

The company has been contacted.
