Two British tourists are missing in Majorca after disappearing in the mountains during a storm.
One of them, a woman, is feared dead after a body was found during a search of the area where they went missing on the Spanish island.
Local authorities had previously said they believed the body to be the 32-year-old man.
They have since declared it to be a woman’s body, while the man is still missing.
A spokesperson for the Civil Guard, which is leading the search, said: ‘With regards to the search operation that is being conducted in the Sa Calobra area, the body discovered corresponds with that of a woman and the person still missing is a man.
‘Work in the Torrent de Pareis itself to find the missing person has been suspended until a storm in the area abates. It will be reinitiated once the storm passes.’
Storm-force windows of up to 75mph are predicted on the island this afternoon, matching the force of the Tuesday’s storm.
Yesterday’s flooding left numerous people stranded and needing rescue from the area of the search.
A statement from the Civil Guard leading the search: ‘With the help of a Civil Guard helicopter, officers were able to save the lives of 10 people who were trapped, without protective clothing, and completely soaked.
‘They were transferred to safety using guides to assist them.
‘Once they reached a safe spot the rescued walkers, two Spaniards and the rest French, German and British, told us two members of a group of five who were among those assisted had been swept away by a torrent of water and they had been unable to do anything to save them and didn’t know where they were.
‘A separate search and rescue operation was mobilised until nightfall which began again today with assistance from firefighters.
‘That operation had so far led to the discovery of the body which could be that of a 32-year-old British man. The operation for a woman of the same nationality is continuing.’
Shortly before the body was found, an emergency services spokesperson said this morning: ‘A search is ongoing for two hikers missing since last night in the vicinity of Torrent de Pareis in Escorca.’
Both tourists are believed to have been near this river in the Tramuntana mountain range on Majorca’s northwest coast, when heavy rain hit.
It’s one of the worst affected areas on the island, with hundreds of people trapped nearby when the Torrent de Es Racó, in Escorca, overflowed.
The gorge is usually dry at this time of year.
Emergency services rescued them with the help of a helicopter.
Civil Guard officers and firefighters are trying the pinpoint the missing tourists’ phones after being given their numbers.
Worse storms expected today may hamper search efforts.
