Police in northern Georgia responded to reports of a shooting at Apalachee High School as students began their fall semester.

State troopers told CNN they were called to an active scene Wednesday morning in the northeast Atlanta suburb of Winder. A handful of ambulances and a medical chopper were seen outside the school.

Apparent gunshot victims were taken to a local hospital, according to CNN. The circumstances surrounding the shooting weren’t immediately clear.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said his office is working with local, state and federal officials.

“I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” he posted on social media shortly before noon.

One NBC News reporter said at least two people were killed by apparent gunfire and four others were believed to have been injured or wounded during the incident. WSB-TV in Atlanta reported a suspect is in custody.

Students returned from summer break Thursday before beginning their Labor Day weekend, according to the Barrow County School System’s online calendar.

Nearly 2,000 students reportedly attend Apalachee High School.
