An 18-month-old girl was killed after an apparent dog attack at a New Jersey home, authorities said.

The tragic incident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Second Avenue near Wakeman Avenue, in the Central Ward neighborhood of Newark.

The girl was under the care of a teenager when she wandered away and encountered the dog, believed to be a pit bull, WABC reported.

She was rushed to University Hospital in Newark and was pronounced dead at around 7 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

A second dog was also at the home at the time, but officials say only one dog appears to have attacked the little girl.

“The investigation is continuing and the official cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy,” Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly told News 12 New Jersey.

Prosecutors have not disclosed whether the family owns the dog or what might have led to the fatal attack.

Both dogs have since been removed from the home, WABC reported.

Last week, another attack involving a pit bull injured a toddler and three other people at a home in East Orange, just outside Newark. All four victims were rushed to University Hospital, reported TAPinto East Orange.

A 22-month-old child underwent emergency surgery for severe facial injuries after that Aug. 28 attack.
