OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT/Gray News) – A Nebraska school district employee has died while working at a high school in Omaha Wednesday morning.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office identified the worker as Kevin Garrison, 50. He was a maintenance supervisor and worked for the Elkhorn School District for 20 years.

Authorities said Garrison was injured while installing turf near the football field at Elkhorn North High School.

The school district said the longtime employee was working in a geothermal well to resolve an issue when he became unresponsive.

Medical personnel responded, but officials said Garrison did not survive.

“Kevin has been a dedicated longtime employee of the Elkhorn Public Schools who was beginning his 20th year with the district,” school leaders shared. “Our deepest condolences go to the Garrison family, including Kevin’s wife, Deb, current EPS principal, and his daughters Nikki and Rachel.”

The school district said students were released early on Wednesday. Counseling support was also made available at the school.

The sheriff’s office reported its investigation remains ongoing but that Garrison may have died from asphyxia.
