Budding young boxers from a club in Toryglen have been doing their bit for the local environment by keeping the area clean.

With loads of encouragement from Head Coach Anthony Quayle, the youngsters from Southside Boxing Academy recently took to the surrounding streets on a litter picking expedition.

It was part of the Active Citizenship programme that the club delivers in conjunction with the National Lottery Community Fund.

Anthony said: “We deliver the Active Citizenship programme through the National Lottery on a Saturday morning and it includes the litter pick. We went round and cleaned the full are up, the local parks and the nearby space at the shops.

“What a difference it made. It was the young people who cleaned it up, the youngest was a wee five-year-old, which is great to see. They are all local weans.

“Cornerstone gave us access to their hall and we cleaned up round about Sanctuary Housing as well.

“We deliver the programme every weekend and do all sorts of stuff in the community to help, painting fences and things like that. They also do a bit of training as well.”

On a Friday afternoon from 3.45pm to 5pm the club also delivers its Feel Good Friday programme that is aimed at adults.

“It’s free and provides mental health support,”Anthony continued. “They can come in and chat about football or whatever and hit the bags.

“It’s relaxed and there’s no boxers attending that so they’re not trying to compete with young 20-year-olds or anything like that.

“We’ve been delivering that for two years now, every Friday.

“We also released a podcast online this week with Stephen Mair [personal trainer and hypnotherapist/counsellor].”
